About this event

The North American electric grid has remained largely static for over a century, but the ongoing climate crisis demands rapid and drastic modernization. The technologies enabling this modernization, such as automated demand response, grid-scale battery energy storage solutions, electric vehicles, and smart inverters, bring new paradigms, new possibilities, and new problems to the space…and a whole bunch of new protocols. Join DANIELLE McGUIRE, SecOps Observability Engineer for Guidepoint Security, for a discussion of well-known protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, ICCP, and MQTT, as well as critical new protocols such as OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, OCPP 1.6 vs 1.6J/2 and ISO 15118. We will discuss the technologies that each of these protocols enable; the key information we need to compare these protocols and put them into broader context; and why the grid of the future may be better understood as an Industrial Internet of Things as opposed to an Industrial Control System.
